Common amongst dieters and fitness gurus alike is the phrase “a calorie is a calorie”. This is not necessarily true. The type, timing, and quality of calories consumed causes different chemical reactions in the body. Cutting calories overall will inevitably lead to weight loss, but the type of calories included in a diet will affect how fast the weight comes off and how easy it is to maintain the weight loss. Calories that come from processed foods and simple carbs have a high glycemic index which means they can slow metabolism whereas complex carbs and proteins have a lower glycemic index and increase metabolism and feelings of fullness. Overtime, these reactions can change how the body loses or maintains weight.
